Self Healing: THE REST RETREAT
SELF-HEALING: THE REST RETREAT
by Candace Kolter
Pursuing deep rest is a way to slow down and reconnect with your natural rhythm. Why would you do that? Feeling calm and free is your birthright and your ticket to a long life. This type of deep rest must be the foundation of any healing strategy.
Deep rest and stillness can profoundly improve health. Using this deep rest to restore flow in all aspects of our lives is the key to more effective, sustainable leadership. Even if you have your mini days in place, if you are not feeling consistently energized, check whether you are actually resting effectively. It's not just a matter of how many hours you sleep. By nature, our bodies typically operate in 90-minute cycles, both when we are awake and when we are asleep. Many people decide to override the 90-minute cycle by skipping a break and reaching for caffeine or sugar. This puts much more stress on the nervous system.
Physical fatigue is just the first layer. If it were the only layer, then just getting more sleep or better-quality sleep would be the solution. The rest retreat restores not just the physical, but also the mental, emotional, and core spirit levels.
If equipment needs periodic tune-ups, people most certainly do. This is a lifestyle tune-up that will pay off in super health for many years. On a deep cellular level, this type of deep rest heals many dimensions and infuses us with amazing courage in all areas of our lives. When you lie down for this deep rest, you discover an inherent stillness that leads to more freedom.
Doing an activity to relax is not the same as deep rest. It may be fun, but it is active and not rest. Activities are focused on the outer world. On the other hand, rest gives you the opportunity to nurture your inner world. The act of nonstop "doing" can keep the sympathetic nervous system on high alert. If you live in the sympathetic mode for long periods of time, you put stress on your entire nervous system.
If you have any health issues, no matter how minor it may seem to you, that is an indication that there is a deficiency in your overall health, which will take a toll on your longevity. Anything that shows up in the physical was already in your biofield years ago. If you have developed inflammation of any kind, this is a warning that you are stressing out your nervous system and that worse consequences will follow if the stress is not alleviated by deep rest.
When we don't get enough rest, we don't give enough essential attention to our creative, passionate, and instinctive selves. At a rest retreat, you are invited to follow these simple steps:
Set an intention.
Rotate your attention to different parts of the body, following the suggestions of the rest retreat facilitator. For example, they may suggest that you start with the toes of your left foot and then move to the toes of your right foot or to your left ankle. Some sessions move from one side of the body to the other, while some move from the feet up and some move from the head down.
Next, use breathing and mindfulness to move your focus beyond the physical. You reach a place of no stress and timelessness. This is achieved by following the facilitator’s prompts or meditative sound frequencies. All of this is supported by quantum physics and cymatics. In the process of moving your focus, you balance the right and left brain. Your brain shifts from beta (awake) to alpha (calm) to theta (dreams and emotional integration) to delta (restoration) to the fourth state of consciousness, a place of no stress and timelessness, which cannot be reached through conventional sleep. A typical forty-five-minute session with this process will feel like you have received the benefits of three hours of sleep. It is deeply restful.
