Self-Healing: Getting Started

By Candace Kolter

My first deep dive into self-healing began in January 2019 after I landed in the hospital for emergency kidney stone surgery. Had I not keeled over backward and been found dehydrating on my living room floor, I would not be writing this now. My left kidney was blocked by six kidney stones, but because I felt no pain, the doctor had never ordered the scan that would have discovered the stones. (Sometimes pain can save your life!)

So how did this all pan out? I left my nephrologist behind after recovering from emergency surgery, found a naturopathic kidney doctor, and went from stage 4 chronic kidney disease to stage 1 (normal) in less than six months. In the process, I lost 85 lbs. of excess weight and put two autoimmune conditions into remission. In addition, I have beat the asthma I had since childhood by running several marathons (approx. 26 miles each). The first one, in Honolulu, took 9-1/2 hours; the second one, in Milwaukee, took 8 hours; and the third one, in Chicago, took 6-1/2 hours.

Since then, I have diligently followed up on many natural solutions. An example of this is that, when I recently had a bad fall on black ice and was dealing with a sprained ankle and a lot of pain and stiffness in my neck, shoulders, and lower back, I knew what to do for myself. As a naturopathic coach for people with chronic kidney disease, my protocol begins with a “rest retreat.” No, this is not napping. Stay tuned! I will expand on the “rest retreat” in the next article in this series. (I recently did a presentation on this in the “Fully Embodying” Workshop.)

My go-to pain reliever is magnesium glycinate. High inflammation or pain often indicates a deficiency in a key nutrient, and quite often, it is magnesium. I will also be expanding on this in a future article. There are multiple forms of magnesium available, and it is important to know when to use them. From there the series will dive into other natural healing methods. The human body, given the right materials and information, is capable of healing from any disease. The alignment of mind, body, and energy field does the work.

“In the anti-civilization, a world that profits from stress and dis-ease, choosing to heal is radical.” —Candace Kolter
